16:9 (widescreen) when making DVD mpeg

Why do I always get an output with aspect ratio 16:9 when I try to generate DVD compliant mpeg movie?

Even when my input file is standard 4:3 file captured from DV camera, the result is always this, Aspect Ratio = 16:9.

DVD MPEG NTSC compliant movies are always in 16:9 (widescreen) aspect ratio.

To maintain the aspect ratio of the original clip:
1. Create a new project in 720 x 480 preview dimension.
2. Add the clip to the timeline.
3. Double click on the clip to set its Stretch Mode and select an appropriate mode.

Now, Make Movie will maintain the original file's aspect ratio

I've created a "Custom Preview Dimension" of 720x576 project.
Then added the clock.avi (321x321) to the project and to the timeline.
Then tested the all 4 stretch modes to generate PAL DVD mpeg2 movie.

The result is always 19:6 - seen with many players (ex. Media Player Classic)

With the Elecard MPEG-2 decoder installed, we followed the same steps and opened the file in Windows Media Player 6. The dimensions reported were 720 x 576 (same as DVD PAL).

However, even we noticed that Windows Media Player 9 reports the dimension as 1024 x 576. This is the incorrect dimensions. We believe that this could be an incompatibility issue in the Elecard MPEG-2 decoder.

I had the same results, the preview window shows bars on each side, as it should, but the movie created does not, and is stretched.

Which MPEG-2 decoder are you using? Elecard?

Do you get the same results when you open the file in Windows Media Player 6 as well as 9?

The latest version of Video Edit Magic lets you specify the Display Aspect Ratio of MPEG 2 (DVD) videos from Make Movie's MPEG Properties. The following three options are available:

1. 4:3 - For Normal TV
2. 16:9 - For HDTV
3. 2.21:1 - For Cinemascope Movie
