When I load new MPEG II file, VEM says there's no audio, even though I can play them in windows media player with audio.

You need to install the recommended MPEG 2 decoder.
You can download the free MPEG 2 decoder from the following link:
https://www.deskshare.com/download/mpeg2decoder.exe
Make sure that you are using the latest version of Video Edit Magic. For more information, visit:
https://www.deskshare.com/vem.aspx
You will also need to disable other MPEG 2 decoders. On the Tools menu, click Options and then click Compatibility. Uncheck all MPEG 2 decoders other than the preferred MPEG 2 decoder. If you have MPEG 2 decoders from Cyberlink or InterVideo, you can try disabling them first.
Note that the Compatibility option disables a compressor only in Video Edit Magic. It does not affect any other installed applications.
